Bringing healthcare worker period parity to the fore
SOS box: an award winning, solution-based focus
Established in August 2018 by a resident doctor (trainee) in South East Wales, UK, the SOS box initiative was developed in response to witnessing the distress of dedicated colleagues experiencing inequities whilst having periods/menstruating within healthcare workplaces
An evolution
Since installing the first four boxes within the messes of three hospitals in South Wales as an experiment and launching the first local survey, the initiative has expanded. Importantly, the powerful concept and imperative need have spread and complemented other emerging cultural changes and campaigns, directly and indirectly encouraging igniting local and wider projects and campaigns. This is about plurality of purpose: about us, we, all.
Behind the SOS box initiative
This initiative is not faceless.
But equally, it is not about one person, the founder.
It’s about a human need, an idea and a solution, that has been and will continue to be shared, passed on, adapted and refined. Not owned or fronted by anyone but about and for all, everyone - our entire community whether you are a healthcare worker or not, you experience periods/menstruation or do not.
The ripples of period-based inequities and stigma are wide and complex, and often intangible. However, raising awareness and sustainably addressing the challenge will benefit all. In doing so, we can further percolate these period parity messages into wider community-based populations worldwide.
As such, Josie has been incredibly fortunate to benefit from many enablers and supporters since 2018:
From Drs Richard Gilpin and Charlie Williams who enabled access to installing an SOS box within a distant hospital site, their critical friendship and encouragement
To Bloody Good period and Freda supplying period products towards the pandemic-fuelled Wales-wide SOS distribution to delivery companies
To Aneurin Bevan Health Board organisational development and facilities leaders through securing organisational agreement to adopt and scale up the SOS boxes
To family, friends and colleagues for amplifying the messages, encouraging in the face of critical responses
To the many who provided feedback through surveys and social media
We are not a traditional team, but a potent and diverse period parity collective
